TU-K complies with NCIC Act 2008
The Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) formerly the Kenya Polytechnic University College (KPUC), is among the four universities that comply with the National Cohesion and Integration Act, 2008. This follows the release of the Commission’s report on the ethnic audit of the public universities. NCIC conducted a research last year with the view of ensuring that universities and institutions of higher learning reflect the face of the nation, by establishing ethnic balancing to various employment positions.
The Act stipulates that no public establishment shall have more than one third of its staff from the same ethnic community. Other Universities who have complied include: Egerton, Multimedia University College and Technical University of Mombasa (formerly Mombasa Polytechnic University College).
The report indicates that the workforce of TU-K is comprised of employees from 20 communities, however, majority are from nine communities. Part of the report reads, “The first five communities represented at the University College (read Kenya Polytechnic University College) are the Kikuyu, Luo, Luhya, Kamba and Kisii who form 83% of the work force in the institution. This could be due to the location of the University College in the Central Business District (CBD) of the city of Nairobi that makes it accessible to those who are qualified.”
The report was sent to TU-K Ag. Vice –Chancellor Prof. Francis Aduol, through a letter by the Commission Secretary Hassan S. Mohammed.
The commission is mandated to eliminate discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, race, religion and social origin in an effort that seeks to create equitable distribution of opportunities to all ethnic, racial and religious groups in Kenya.
